Ira Aldridge died on 8 August 1867 in Łódź, Poland aged 60 as a result of pneumonia. His original grave became forgotten and overgrown but in 1890 his daughter, Suranah, performed in a concert in the city to raise funds for a monument. He was buried in the graveyard of the Evangelical Church in Łódź in 1890, the graveyard was damaged at the end of the second world war and Ira's gravestone was restored after this with his picture included on it.
