Shakespeare Connected - Ageless Cleopatra

Alexandria… New York*

The collection includes a copy of Antony and Cleopatra produced by the Limited Editions Club of New York (1939). It boasts hand-coloured wood engravings (made on polished wood blocks) by Enric-C. Ricart of Spain.

The images are characterised by the thick bodies and subtle facial features of the figures, as well as the lively colours and patterns.

While producing these pieces, the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) presented some challenges for Ricart. He had no access to wooden blocks, so these were smuggled from New York. When he finished the engravings, he couldn’t get them out of Spain until US officials in Barcelona intervened.

*The title of a 2004 movie by famed Egyptian director Youssef Chahine.
