During the 18th century, Shakespeare’s plays continued to be staged in the clothing of the period. Fashion had changed, but the practice of setting Shakespeare’s plays in the recognisable environment of the present day had not. This 1709 frontispiece (introductory illustration) for King Lear depicts Lear and his companions in early 18th-century frock coats and tricorn hats.
