Shakespeare Connected - Costuming Shakespeare: Elizabethan Dress through the Centuries

Motley for As You Like It, 1952

The design team Motley (made up of Margaret Harris, Sophie Harris, and Elizabeth Montgomery Wilmot) worked on more than 150 productions between 1932 and 1976. Motley developed an aesthetic that centred on the adaptation of historical styles of dress.
This costume design for Rosalind in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s 1952 As You Like It features a simple oversized doublet and white collared shirt to communicate the production’s Elizabethan setting.
