Shakespeare Connected - Discovering the Guild Chapel

Graffiti in the Guild Chapel

Image from Pamela Devine? Terry Galvin?

Graffiti might seem an incongruous image to include in our online exhibition, but our discoveries in the archives are encouraging us to look again at the fabric of the chapel in new ways. Pamela Devine is currently undertaking a survey of graffiti in the Guild Chapel. This remarkable heraldic shield, located on the chancel arch, is an exquisite reminder of the ways in which people interacted with the Guild Chapel during the early modern period.

Perhaps this drawing records a long-lost detail of the stained glass, or the shields once held by our angel figures? Or perhaps it was the work of someone determined to make their mark - both physically and socially - aspiring to gain their own coat of arms and follow in the footsteps of Hugh Clopton himself?
