Shakespeare Connected - Discovering the Guild Chapel

Wilfred Puddephat

Wilfred Puddephat recording the Dance of Death, 1955

“..the frustration of knowing so little about the remains of this mural eventually drove me up the wall...with a tape measure in my hand' (SBT DR624/13 (iii)).

Wilfred Puddephat (1915-1974) was the Art Master of King Edward VI Grammar School who discovered the remains of the Dance of Death and Life of Adam paintings on the walls of the nave in 1955. Puddephat’s meticulous recording, transcription and reconstruction drawings are a unique resource for studying the building.
