A large amount of window glass was recovered from within three soakaway drains (‘French drains’). These drains related to the second period of construction of New Place (1702). The smashed glass was direct evidence of the deliberate and forceful nature of Rev Francis Gastrel’s destruction. This appears to confirm it was a hasty affair and not a planned and steady demolition.
