Shakespeare Connected - Shakespeare’s New Place: Artefacts and Inhabitants

Tuning Pegs (Probably 16th to 17th Century) (Context 7018, Season 3)

These cylindrical bone tuning pegs were used to tighten and peg the strings in place on small musical instruments. This example would have been of a type thought to be the predecessor to the modern violin, harp or guitar. Music would have performed an important role in the Shakespeare household and would have elevated the social status of the occupants.
