Sharing Shakespeare's Story
Embroidered gloves
These gloves are made of kid leather and are lined with pink silk. The cuffs are decorated with silver braid and floral designs. This tells us that a man of very high status would have worn these gloves. It also tells us that they were mostly worn to show off the wearers social status, gloves like these were often worn tucked into belts, carried in the hand or even attached to hats. They were also a popular courtship gift. Shakespeare's father was a glover and Shakespeare would have grown up very familiar with gloves and the gloving trade.
