Rowington and Baddesley Clinton

Description

The will of Richard Hodgkines of Rowington labourer whereby his body was to be buried in the churchyard of Rowington. His wife Eleanor was to hold for the term of her life the messuage in which the said Richard lived in Rowington with the appurtenances belonging to the same and two orchards, a garden and two closes called the Two closes, but after her death the said property was to pass to John Burgoyne of Rowington gent., William Collines of Rowington tanner, Clement Tibbattes of Rowington tanner and William Cowper of Rowington cooper, friends of the said Richard, in trust to sell the same for uses to be specified. The said trustees were also to sell a close called Square close in Rowington for the benefit of Richard, son of the said Richard, John Hodgkines, son of the said Richard, was to receive pasture ground in Baddesly Clynton called the close next to the Greene field, which was the inheritance of Edward Ferrers esq., in recompence for debts due to the said John, and the said John was to give a release for the same to the executor of the said Richard. The money derived from the sale of Square close was to be held by the said trustees for Richard son of the said Richard for the term of his life, and to be divided equally among his children when they reached the age of 21 years, or in default of such issue, the said money was to be held to the use of the wife of the said Richard Hodgkines the younger, or if he died unmarried was to pass to the said John son of the said Richard. The money derived from the sale of the said messuage was to be used first of all for £6 13s. 4d. to be placed in the hands of the said trustees for the benefit of the said son Richard and his wife and family as outlined in the sale of Square close, £20 was to be paid within two years to his said son John, and the residue was to be held by the said trustees in trust for Jane, daughter of the said Richard, for life, and if she married to be divided equally among her children when they reached the age of 21 years, or in default of such issue, the said money was to be divided equally between his said sons Richard and John, Richard's share to be held as outlined in the sale of Square close. If any two of the said trustees died before the execution of the said will, the remaining trustees were to execute the same with the assistance of Edward Ferrers of Badesly Clynton esq. and Robert Warner of Rowington gent. The said Eleanor was to receive 2 cows and all necessary household stuff as determined by the said trustees for the term of her life, provision being made for the security of the same, and the remainder, when all debts, funeral expenses etc. had been paid, was to pass to the said John Burgoyne who was named as executor of the said will, who with the help of the said William Cooper was to sell or divide the same among the said John, Richard and Jane, children of the said Richard, and if any of the said children did not agree to this division they were to be excluded from it. William and Clement Tibbattes were named as overseers of the said will, each of whom was to receive 12d. for their pains. 27 May 9 Charles I [1633].
