Description

John Archer, late of Tanworth, gent., William Parsons, the same, yeoman and John Sheldon, the same, yeoman attached to answer Richard Salter, John Vesye and Katherine Clerkeson, widow for the seizure of 40 cart-loads of timber of the same to the value of 10 marks on 30 Oct 1501. they claim damages of 20 marks. Defence claim that lands on which goods seized were called Barnefeld, containing 10 ac pasture and 6 ac woods which were formerly held by Thomas Clerkson, together with 3 messuages and 10 ac pasture called Swandych, Polfeld and Browns croft. He held them of John Archer for service of a sixth part of a knight's fee, 29s rent and suit to the manor court of Monkspath with best animal as heriot. After death of Thomas Clerkson, land descended to John Clerkson as son and heir and, on his death to William Clerkson his brother and heir. Distraint was made in respect of 16s unpaid rent and entry fine.
