Stratford-upon-Avon: Guild of the Holy Cross: Roll of grants

Description

A roll of grants with, in most instances, seals attached on the right hand margin of the record. The Grants are to the Gild or Fraternity of the Holy Cross at Stratford. They are undated, but the handwriting is that of the 13th century (1). Grant in frankalmoign by Alan Skinner (Pelliparius) of Stratford to the Fraternity of the Holy Cross of Stratford, for the safety of his soul and of those of his ancestors, of a piece of land with appurtenances in the town of Stratford lying between the land of the donor on one side and the land which Richard Young (Iuuenis) formerly held on the other side, paying therefore yearly to the Bishop of Worcester 3d Witnesses: John son of Hugh, Robert de Hudecote, Robert le Couper, Robert Lithulf, John Kynchot and others No seal or place for one 2. Grant in frankalmoign by William Wade of Stratford to the same Fraternity, for the safety of his soul and those of his ancestors, of 6d. yearly receivable from a messuage in the town of Stratford between the land of John the Whitesmith (Albus faber) on one side and the land which Robert de Byllyeley held on the other side Witnesses: Walter Bouche, William the Dyer (Tinctor), Hugh le Glew, Nicholas de Burley, Nicholas Bekelyn and others No seal, nor place for one. (See no.) (3). Grant by Gilbert Edemay of Stratford to the same Fraternity for the safety of his soul and those of his ancestors of a yearly rent of 4d. to be received at the four terms of the year according to the custom of the town of Stratford out of a messuage in the town of Stratford between the land of John de Neubolde on one side and the land which William Coffyn held on the other side Witnesses: William the Dyer (Tinctor), Walter Bouche, John Kynchot, John Blosme, William le Couper and others Fragment of a circular seal of green wax attached on the right hand margin. A fleur-de-lys. --- ERTI--- (4). Grant by Nigel Helle to the same Fraternity, for the safety of his soul and those of his ancestors, of a messuage with its appurtenances lying in the town of Stratford in the Street called Walkeresstret between the land of the Blessed Virgin Mary on one side and the land of Richard Warner on the other Witnesses: John the Whitesmith (Albus faber), Oliuer Godhyne, Richard Heruy, William Saucer, Peter de Grenhul and others No seal nor place for one (5). Grant by Henry de Leycestria to the same Fraternity and for the same object of a yearly rent of 9d. to be taken from the land lying in the town of Stratford between the land which Henry de Lyllynton' held on one side and the land which William le Gaunter held on the other Witnesses: Richard Warner, Robert le Couper, John Kynchot, Hugh le Glew, John de Dumbylton' and others Seal of green wax, circular, of which only about half remains. Grant by John the Whitesmith (Albus faber) of Stratford to the same Fraternity and for the same object of a yearly rent of 12d. to be taken from the place whereupon Robert de Byllysley built a solar and which lies in the town of Stratford between the land of the donor on one side and the land of the aforesaid Robert on the other Witnesses: John le Tannur, John Hemery, Nicholas de Couentr', William Spycer, Peter Lythulf and others Portion of circular seal of green wax attached. A fleur-de-lys (7). Grant by Denysya daughter of Roger le Mercer of Stratford to the same Fraternity and for the same object of a yearly rent of 6d. from land in the town of Stratford between the land of the said Roger le Messer [sic] on one side and the land which Hugh le Tannur held on the other Witnesses: John le Tannur, John de Wellesburn', Peter Lythulf, Roger de Boueton, Richard le Potter and others No seal, nor place for one (8). Grant by Hugh de Sturton' to the same Fraternity and for the same object of a yearly rent of 12d. from a messuage in the town of Stratford between the land of John de Campedene on one side and the land which Richard Toht formerly held on the other Witnesses: John son of Hugh, William the Dyer (Tinctor), Hugh de Sleford, John de Walda, Henry de Boueton and others No seal nor place for one (9). Grant by Roger Thebaut to the same Fraternity and with the same object of a yearly rent of 12d. from a messuage which Gilbert Makerel held in Stratford between the land of the same Gilbert on one side and the land which John de Dumbylton' held on the other Witnesses: Walter Bouche, William the Dyer (Tinctor), John de Dumbylton', John Kynchot, Gilbert Edemay and others Parchment tag for seal remains (10). Grant by Richard de Lonkedone by the assent of Alice his wife to the same Fraternity and with the same object of a messuage with its appurtenances in Stratford between the land of Thomas the Wheelwright (Rotarius) on one side and the land which Thomas de Lyllynton' held on the other, paying yearly therefor to the Bishop of Worcester 12d. and to Yseude de Aldremonston' 3s. at the four terms of the year Witnesses: Robert le Tanner, Richard Warner, Richard le Ferur, Thomas le Taylur, Richard de Weston' and others No seal nor place for one (11). Grant by Hugh le Tannur to the same Fraternity and with the same object of a yearly rent of 6d. from a messuage which William Russel held in Stratford lying between the land of Richard Warner on one side and the land which Lythulf le Tannur formerly held on the other Witnesses: Richard Warner, Henry de Burley, Thomas Scyrloc, Oliuer Godhyne, Henry son of Hugh and others.
