Admin History

Lee Crowder and Co., a Birmingham based solicitors' firm, was founded in 1760, when Thomas Eyre Lee set up business as an attorney. The firm was involved in the building of the Birmingham and Liverpool Railway and the London and Birmingham Railway. One if its earliest clients was John Taylor, who financed the establishment of Lloyds Bank. Since 1760, members of the Lee family have practised law in Birmmgham, including Thomas Marston Lee, Thomas Eyre Lee's tenth direct descendant, who worked in the firm between 1941 and 1972. In 1936, the practices of Lee Arthur Smith and Smythe Etches and Co. owned by John Crowder (and his father and granfather before him) joined together and became Lee, Crowder and Co. The present name was adopted in 1989. Birmingham Archives and Heritage Service at the Library of Birmingham has a number of documents relating to the firm.
