Robert Hiorne Hobbes; Emma Silver Mining Company Limited
The Emma Mining Company of Utah was founded in 1871. There being no suitable smelting works in the Unites States at the time the ore was shipped to Wales for purification. In 1872 British capitalists purchased the company and re-named it the Emma Silver Mining Company Limited. A protracted legal case ensued between the British investors in the company and the American vendors regarding a misrepresentation of the facts and profitability of the venture. The investment was costly and ultimately unsuccessful due to an expensive legal case and a collapse of the main mine shaft.
