Description

Lease for 15 years or longer from Thomas le Archer the elder of Toneworth' to Edward Metleye and Margaret his wife of a close of land , meadow and pastures with woods called le Newlond in Toneworth', lying between the highway from the church of Toneworth' leading towards Pacwode, which the said Edward and Margaret held from the said Thomas for rent before the date of this charter; to hold for 15 years for the rent of one flowering rose on the feast of the Nativity of St John the Baptist if demanded; the said Edward and Margaret to have the right to retain the property longer if they were impleaded for dower or any other demand until they had been sufficiently compensated for the same; the said Edward and Margaret to pay a rent of £10 [ 2 terms] if they wished to remain on the said lands after the said term of 15 years had expired, the said Thomas to have the right of re-entry for non-payment or arrears. Dated at Toneworth' on the feast of the Annunciation of the Blessed Mary, 14 Henry V [ Henry V started his reign 21 March 1413 but decimo of date seems to have been added later.] Witnesses: John Fulwode, Thomas Waryn, John Dolfyn, Ralph Creuley, John Densy and others. 1, Circular seal of red wax on tag, 3/4 in., on a shield a chevron between three eagles with wings displayed and inverted the whole within a cusped circular border. 2, Circular seal of red wax on tag, 1/2 in.
