Settlement previous to the marriage of John Archer', son and heir of John Archer the elder, and Margaret, daughter of Humphrey Stafford' of Grafton' esquire, deceased, which marriage is to take place before All Hallows [1 November] next, being a covenant between the said John Archer the elder and Thomas Stafford', brother of the said Humphrey, that before All Hallows next the said John Archer the elder would make an estate to Richard Lord Latymer', Hugh Conwey knight, Richard Emson' esquire, Edward Belknap' esquire, Humphrey Stafford' esquire, Robert Morgan' esquire, Richard Hubaude esquire, and Richard Poynour of lands to the value of £20 consisting of the manor of Botley to the annual value of 20 marks, to be held after the following Michaelmas to the use of the said John Archer' the younger and Margaret and their lawful issue, or in default to revert after the death of the said John Archer' the younger and Margaret to the said John Archer the elder and his heirs, and lands and tenements to the annual value of 10 marks, the residue of the said £20, to be held to the use of the said John Archer the elder for his life with remainder as before, and also that all the property of the said John Archer' the elder should after his death pass to the said John Archer the younger, excepting any annuities of the annual value of 5 mrks which he might wish to make to any of his counsel for life or for a term of lives; that the said Thomas Stafford' for his part should pay the said John Archer the elder £120, £60 of which was to be paid one month before the said marriage, for which the said John Archer' the elder was to clothe the said John Archer the younger and Margaret for the said marriage, and the remaining £60 as follows: £15 at Lady Day next, £15 at Michaelmas next, £15 at Lady Day following and £15 at the Michaelmas following; the said John Archer' the elder granted also that the said John Archer' the younger should allow the said Thomas Stafford' to have the bequest of all goblets and sums of money which the said Margaret and her sisters were bequeathed by Dame Margaret late Lady Layman', the said John and Margaret at the cost of the said Thomas to maintain any actions concerning the same and to sign acquittances for the same as thought necessary by the said Thomas and his counsel; the said Thomas as surety for the performance of this covenant to make an estate of the manor of Totenho, co. Buckyngham to Edward Belknap' esquire, Robert Fulwod', John Boteler' Thomas Waryng', John Sheldon' and Richard Wyllys to hold to the use of the said Thomas if he carried out this agreement and kept four bonds of £15 for which the said Thomas was bound to the said John Archer' the elder.
