Hodgson of Clopton House: Correspondence and diary notes

Description

From Arthur Hodgson, Montpellier, Brisbane to Frank Hodgson. He has Frank's letter of June 14 and is expecting the July letter as the steamer has arrived from Brisbane. He is not to be Agent General as Mr John Douglas has been appointed. On the 22nd he is going to some of the Northern ports which he has not yet visited, accompanying the Governor. Then they start for Rome. He had hoped that Annie could meet them there but she may not be able to because of the expense. He asks Frank to let him know if he will be joining them for Christmas. He will be glad and anxious to see him again and wonders where Edward will be. Emily has been riding a good deal. Her habit hides her large proportions. They are to have the Earl of Belmore, the New South Wales Governor, in Brisbane in a few days. They need some rain to lay the dust and make the grass grow. He thinks that the Colony will not be as good for young men of capital as it was when he remembers it and squatting will die out, except for cattle, which have risen in price, probably because of the new method of meat curing. He must try to send more seeds for Mr Hay. Annie has written that Frank looks like his Mama. He mentions the Mordaunt scandal and says that it is 'a field for conversation in Leamington and that neighbourhood'.
