Admin History

George Bullen (1816-1894) was Keeper of Printed Books at the British Museum library between 1875 and 1890, and published the 'Catalogue of Books in the Library of the British Museum Printed in England, Scotland, and Ireland, and of Books in English Printed Abroad, to the Year 1640', in 1884. He was twice married, and his second son by his first wife, Eliza Mary Martin (d. 1887), was Arthur Henry Bullen (1857-1920), founder of the Shakespeare Head Press. Eliza Martin is not represented in the collection; the photographic items in DR1424/2, according to annotations on the photographs, are images of George Bullen's second wife [name unknown].
Detail on the photographs and investigation into the work of the photographers and studios would suggest that these photographs were taken between 1870 and 1900. Sources: PhotoLondon.
