Description

Description [taken from deed of exchange 10 June 1542] of lands exchanged by Catesby in Clopton. Below is note to enquire whether my Lord Carew has any of the lands or whether any of the Cloptons sold any. At the head of the extract, partially covering it, is a note describing the descent of the lands after exchange by sale from William Clopton to Rice Griffin to John Combe who "sold it to William Shackspeare who had one daughter and gave the said land with his daughter in marriage to Mr. Hall of Stratford who hath now all the said landes". 12 acres reserved by Clopton in first sale whereon built windmill "now decayed" and which are held by John Smyth of Stratford, maultster, by lease for "Mr. William Clopton in the north" for 21 years. Note in margin: "To enquire of William Aynge, Thomas Greene and old horne and to enquire of William Askewe".
