Stratford-upon-Avon: Guild of the Holy Cross: Borough bye-laws c.

Description

A sheet of paper which had formed two leaves in a rough note or account book, undated but apparently of the reign of Richard II. It is written on both sides The first page commences with regulations made by the whole Commonalty of the township of Stratford that "no one permit pigs `post separacionem' to go or to dig on the pavement to the common injury under the penalty of 40d to be paid to the profit of the commonalty of the said town, as often as c., and leviable by Richard Ilmendon, John Regnald and William Walker. Likewise that no one permit a bitch in season (aliquam canam jolyfes) to go at large in the town under the penalty of 12d. to be paid as often as c." Then follows a list of names of members of the Gild of the Holy Cross and payments made at an `Interlocutio' similar to those mentioned below and after this a `Memorandum that Walter --- from his office and in his place is elected Ro--- And John Reynald and Richard Ilmundon --- are elected on the day and year aforesaid', but the date is lost The second page contains a similar list of the names of members of the Gild of the Holy Cross with the amount paid at the `Interlocutio' but the date is lost. Page three contains a similar list for the `Interlocutio' held on Sunday next (after) the feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist in the 10th year [of the reign of Richard II]. There is a similar list on the fourth page for the `Interlocutio' held on Sunday next after the feast of the reign of the King [Richard II] The payment at the `Interlocutio' is generally 2d. occasionally it is 1d
