Description

Letter from the Bailiff and Burgesses of Stratford upon Avon to Arthur Manneringe [Manwaring] esq. `at the lord Chauncellor his house' warning him, as owner of lands, etc. in Welcombe, not to proceed with `an Inclosure here', entreating him `to call to mynde the manifold greate and often miseries this borough hath sustayned by casualties of fires fresh in memorie and now of a late one lyeinge in the Ashes of desolacion' such inclosure tending to the ruin of the borough. Dated at Stratford [23 December] 1614. Endorsed: `Coppy of the Lettre intended to Mr Manerynge'. According to the Diary of Thomas Greene, town-clerk, the letter was written at a Hall on 23 December (Halliwell-Phillipps, op. cit. i, p. 228). Folio 80.
