Inquisition held at Shereborn', co. Dors., Tuesday before the Ascension, 6 Henry VI, before John Gregory, escheator of Dorset. The jurors (named) state on oath that William Lord Botreaux was once seized of the third part of the manor of Maydens Newton' with all its appurtenances and with all other properties pertaining to the same in Crokwey, Natton' and Thrope, co. Dorset; which third part was held of the Duchy of Lancaster (service unknown) and the appurtenances in Crokwey and Thrope of the chief lord of the fee (service unknown); and which third part etc. he granted by indenture to John Stafford and Anne his wife, William's daughter, to hold of him, with rights of reversion to him in default of direct heirs; and the said Anne has since died; and the said John died on Wednesday after the feast of All Saints last [5 November], seized of the said third part etc.; which third part of Mayden Newton' is worth £2. 16s. 8d. and the rest 20 shillings; and Humphrey Stafford is son and heir of the said John and Anne, and is aged 32.
