Autograph Collection: Davis collection

Description

Four volumes.

Please note: these volumes contain references to events or attitudes, that may cause concern, distress or offence. Please check individual entries for details and please advise members of staff if you have any queries or concerns.

These volumes (formerly A1, A2, A3, A4 ) contain letters, envelopes, autographs, photographs, drawings, newscuttings and printed ephemera relating to, or written by, a wide range of late eighteenth- to early twentieth-century eminent persons, including royalty, and theatrical, literary, scientific and political figures.

The first three volumes have separate indexes: the fourth has an index bound in. Many of the letters are addressed to Dr Maurice and Esther Davis and Raphael and Ella Meldola. Many others, now dispersed throughout the volumes, are clearly from the papers of the actor and dramatist, Charles James Mathews (1803-1878), and include many items relating to his wife, the actress Madame Lucia Elizabeth Vestris (1797-1856), and some to his father, the actor Charles Mathews (1776-1835).
