The 'Warwick' Shakespeare deed

Description

Unsigned counterpart of conveyance of 107 acres in the fields of Old Stratford from John and William Combe to William Shakespeare. On deposit at the SBT for c20 years by Early of Warwickshire before being removed by depositor for auction at Sotheby's on 12 December 1997. Did not meet reserve and was subsequently purchased by a private overseas buyer. Item was subject to an export bar of 5 months during which the SBT was able to raise sufficient funds to purchase it through the V&A Purchase Grant and the Heritage Lottery Fund.
