Custodial History

The records of the Dispensary passed to the new Hospital in 1884 and, together with those of the Workhouse remained on site until major building work in 1975 when the majority were destroyed before rescue.

Admin History

Stratford-upon-Avon Dispensary was established in premises at 21 Chapel Street in 1823, moving to Chapel Lane in 1835. A new Hospital was opened on the Alcester Road in 1884, replacing the Dispensary. Under the terms of the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act, the new Unions of Parishes were obliged to build workhouses, that for Stratford being opened in 1836 on a site in Arden Street which subsequently formed part of the Hospital. In 1929 its administration was transferred to the Public Assistance Committee of Warwickshire County Council
