Printed poster 'The Conscience Clause', containing regulations concerning religious instruction to be conspicuously displayed in all elementary schools under the provisions of the Elementary Education Act, 1870

Custodial History

Presumably issued to the Elementary School at Bearley (later Bearley County Junior and Infant School) where it remained until donated to the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust by the Head Teacher.

Admin History

Published to conform with the provisions of the 1870 Elementary Education Act: Section 7(1) of the act allowed school boards to decide whether their schools should give religious instruction, but if it was provided it had to be non-denominational. A conscience clause was added permitting parents to withdraw their children from religious instruction if they so wished
