Northweald Basset manorial records: Archer of Tanworth

Description

Manorial records for Northweald Basset, Essex The manor was in the ownership of Margaret, Countess of Salisbury until her attainder in 1540. It was subsequently granted to Sir Richard Higham who sold to Sir Richard Rich, later Lord Rich and, between 1547 and 1551, Lord Chancellor. The manor was presumably settled upon his eldest son, Hugh and his wife Anne, upon his marriage, as his widow, who had subsequently married Henry Fitzalan, Lord Maltravers, was holding her court there in 1557 and 1558. She died in 1580/1 when the lordship reverted to her brother-in-law, Robert, Lord Rich. His son, also Robert, was created Earl of Warwick in August 1618. In 1621 the manor was sold to Sir Thomas Cheeke, who is named as lord in the roll for 11 August in that year. Cheeke had married Essex, one of Rich's daughters. Cheeke settled the manor on his second son, Thomas in 1652. In December 1659 the lords of the manor were named as Edward, Earl of Manchester, Lancelot Lake and Carew Harvey Mildmay, esqs., presumably as trustees. Manchester had married, in 1626, as his second wife, Anne, daughter of Robert Rich, second Earl of Warwick and in 1642 as his third wife, his second wife's cousin, Essex, daughter of Sir Thomas Cheeke. His fourth wife, in 1659, was Eleanor, widow of Robert, second Earl of Warwick. The manor descended in the Cheeke family until the death, childless in 1712 of Edward when it passed to Ann, daughter of Thomas Cheeke and wife of Sir Thomas Tipping, 1 sups; supt; baronet. When she died in 1727 the manor descended to her daughter Catherine, wife of Thomas Archer, later 1 sups; supt; Lord Archer.
