Stratford-upon-Avon: Guild of the Holy Cross: Roll of grants

Description

A roll of grants with, in most instances, seals attached to the right hand margin of the record. The grants are to the Gild or Fraternity of the Holy Cross of Stratford. They are undated, but the handwriting is that of the 13th century (1). Grant in frankalmoign by John son of Edith de Stratford to the fraternity of the Holy Cross for the safety of his soul and those of his ancestors of a yearly rent of 12d. from a messuage in the town of Stratford between the land which Alice le Iugelur held on one side and the land of Richard Warner on the other Witnesses: Sir (Dom.) John the Chaplain `my brother', John son of Hugh, John de Wellesburne, Henry son of Hugh, Nicholas de Couentre, and others Seal of green wax, circular, a pointed oval, damaged. A lion rampant. S' IOH --- (2). Grant by Emma Dylun to the same fraternity and with the same object of a yearly rent of 2d. from land in the town of Stratford between that which John Blosme held on one side and that which Hugh le Glew held on the other Witnesses: William the Dyer (Tinctor), Walter Bouche, Hugh le Glew, John Kynchot, John Blosme and others No seal nor place for one (3). Grant by Robert le Tannur to the same fraternity and with the same object of a yearly rent of 6d. from a messuage which William le Spycer held in the town of Stratford between the land of the said [blank] on one side and the land which Henry son of Hugh held on the other Witnesses: Richard Warner, Henry de Burley, John Hemery, Richard Heruy, William Saucer and others Seal lost (4). Grant by Richard Warner to the same fraternity and with the same object of land in the town of Stratford in the Street called Swynisstret between the land of the Blessed Virgin on one side and the land which Hugh Warner formerly held on the other: to be held by the fraternity freely for one rose to the donor and his heirs at the Feast of St. John the Baptist Witnesses: John son of Hugh, Robert le Couper, Robert Lythulf, William Saucer, Peter de Grenhul and others Seal of green wax, a pointed oval. Grant by John le Spendur with the assent of Christiana his wife to the same fraternity and with the same object of a yearly rent of 9d. from the land of that corner which extends from Auene towards Dedelone on the north Witnesses: John son of Hugh, Robert le Couper, Walter Bouche, John Kynchot, Gilbert Makerel and others No seal nor place for one (7). Grant by Richard le Ferur of Stratford to the same fraternity and with the same object of a yearly rent of 5s. from two messuages in Stratford which Alan de Folur and Walter le Folur held between the land which John Kynchot formerly held on one side and the land which Thomas le Prest held on the other Witnesses: Richard de Lega, Robert le Tannur, John le Tannur, Robert le Couper, William the Dyer (Tinctor) and others Parchment tag for seal remaining (8). The two entries following are in a different hand Grant by Richard de Stretfort "de Lyrestrie" to the same fraternity and with the same object of a yearly rent of 4d. which the donor had been accustomed to receive from a tenement in Scepstret which William le Couper held in Stratford lying between the land which the said William le Couper formerly held on the one side and the land which Richard Herui held on the other: and for this gift and grant all the brethren aforesaid granted to the said Richard and Matilda his wife that they should be quit during their lives of the accustomed yearly [fines] for light and for drinking ("ad lumen per annum et ad potationem") Witnesses: William the Dyer (Tinctor) Thomas] Scirloc, John Edemay, Adam de Soottrith, clerk, Nicholas B---, Rayer de Weston and others Seal and tag missing (9) Grant by Godfrey de Preston' and Margery his wife to the same fraternity and with the same object of a messuage in Stratford extending into Henley Street and lying between the land which Henry de Ponte held on one side and the land which Henry held on the other. Paying therefor yearly to Henry de Ponte and his heirs 2s. Witnesses: Nicholas Begelin, then Reeve, Henry de Ponte, John de Burleye, John the Whitesmyth (Albus faber), Henry le Wayte, John le Proude, John de Fillegraus, Adam de Scotrith, clerk, and others Seal of green wax, circular, broken and defaced. ---SCV--- The roll ia endorsed in a hand of temp.
