Temple Balsall

Petition to Francis Lord Guildford Keeper of the Great Seal by Sir Robert Sawyer knight Attorney Genral, acting on behalf of the Churchwardens of of St Mary in Warwick and the poor of Hampton in Arden and the hamlett of Balsall, on behalf of the Brethren of the Hospital of the Earl of Leiceter and also for certain copyholdres of the Manor of Balsall reciting that Lady Catherine Leveson gave the said manors to charitable uses and on 20 Feb 1670 made a codicil settling in Trust the Manor of Foxley co. Nthts; to the use of the poor of Blaxley, Pattishull, Nthts; Lillehull co. Salop Trentham co. Staffs; Itchington. To provide among others for the poor widows and umnmarried women of Balsall and Thomas Evetts to be receiver of renrs therein. during his lief. and pay the same in part to the repair of the hospital or almshouse. The trustees being Richard Nuport, Charles Leigh, Sir William Bromley, Sir Fulke Lucy, Sir Bryan Broughton William Sneyd, and others named. Now the trust has fallen into the hands of Thomas Evetts owing to the remoteness of the trustees, who was bayliff to Lady Catherine and he has taken possession of many of the farms etc. and although the Manor of Foxley is in itself sufficient, has neglected to find the £40 assigned to the repair of chapel on the South of the choir of St Mary's in Warwick, That Thomas is living in the Manor house of Balsall and combined with Mathew Holbeche whom he has promised to appoint steward of the manor, to the damage of the copyholders.
