Description

Letter from W[illiam] Barnes to Henry Smith, Bailiff of Stratford, praying that the bearer John Yeatt, `lodder' [loader] to his mills at Clifford may be relieved of an impost of 4d a week for the poor, he himself undertaking that so long as the said John continue in his service, the town shall not be burdened with the support of his children. Dated at Clifford, January 1616/17. On the back is a draft of the answer, to the effect that the said John Yeates, as a stranger, must find two sureties that, while in Barnes' service or after, neither he nor his family shall be chargeable to the borough.
