Compton Verney: early deeds, Compton Murdak, copy deeds

Description

Copies of 8 deeds relating to Compton Murdak:

1) Grant by John Watton of Lighthorne to his sons John and William, of one messuage and one carucate of land, with appurtenances, which were William Durvassal's, in Compton Murdak, to be worked equally between them.

To hold the same with rights appurtenant, in heredity, form the chief lord of the fee, for services due and accustomed.

Dated at Compton Murdak, Sunday after Michaelmas, 5 Richard II [6 October 1381]


2) Release and quitclaim by Robert Durvassall of Compton Murdak, son of John Durvassal, late of the same, to John Watton of Lighthorne, of all his rights in the lands, tenements and appurtenances which lately belonged of the said John Durvsaal in Compton Murdak.

3) Grant by John Watten of Lighthorne to John Blockley and William Blockley, clerk, of all his lands and tenements, rents and services, with appurtenances, pasture, grazing, wards, releifs and eschaets, which formerly were William Durvassal's in Compton Murdak.

To hold the same of the chief lord of the fee for services due and accustomed.

4) Release and quitclaim by Richard Prewes of Balscote, Oxfordshire to John Watton of Lighthorne, of all his rights in a toft with curtilage and one and a quarter virgates of land, with appurtenances in Compton Murdak, which the said John holds by grant and feoffment of him.

5) Grant by Richard Prews of Balscote, Oxfordshire, to John Watton of Lighthorne, of one toft with curtilage and one and a half acres of land in the fields of Compton Murdak, formerly in the tenure of Gilbert Page and Beatrice Durvassall , and which said Richard holds by gift and feoffment of the said John Watton.

To hold of the chief lord of the fee for services due and accustomed.

6) Grant by John Watton of Lighthorne to Robert Schid [? Child], rector of the church of St Laurence, Lighthorne, and Richard Browton, rector of the church of St Laurence, Warwick, of one messuage and one virgate of arable land in Compton Murdak, which Gilbert Page held, with a furlong of land in the same place, which Beatrice Bressell formerly held.

To hold the same of the chief lord of the fee for services due and accustomed.

7) Power of attorney from William, son of John Durvassall of Compton Mordak to Richard Monok [?] to deliver seisin to William Murdak, chaplain, of all the lands and tenements, rents and services of the said William Durvassall, as more plainly appears in a deed to the said William.

Dated at Staverton, Thursday before the translation of St Thomas the martyr, 44 Edward III [6 July 1370] [See DR98/35]

8) Grant by Robert Durvassall, son of John of Compton Murdak, to John, son of Geoffrey Smith of Compton and his heirs, of one messuage with garden adjoining down to the stream ('aquam fluentem'), with ten acres of arable land in the fields of Compton,

five of which lie in the east field, viz:
one acre at the hornpit beside the land of Gilbert 'le Gruc', with meadow;
one rood between The Hale, with appurtenances beside the land of Henry Reve;
half an acre on Swepefurlong, with meadow beside the land of Henry Reve;
half an acre called 'Maddeshandlonde';
one acre in the Banlond beside the land of Gilbert Grys;
one acre in the Hale beside the land of Gilbert Grys;
one rood called 'le hanedfryere';
one rood upon Banlond beside the land of Henry Reve;
one rood upon Banlond beside the land of Gilbert Grys;
one rood upon Banlond beside the land of Gilbert Grys abutting on 'Lodrichesweye';
one rood against'Alleschadeshull' beside the land of Gilbert Grys;
one rood upon 'Dadelowe' beside the land of a certain Henry son of William.

and in the west field:
one acre in Northmede beside the land of Gilbert Grys;
one half acre in Northmede beside the land of Gilbert Grys;
one rood upon 'Ruggeforlonge' beside the land of the said Gilbert;
one acre upon Banlond beside the 'waterforen';
one acre upon Superiorfurlong beside Gilbert Grys;
one acre on the Huntingland extending between 'Stonlamore' and the land of Gilbert Grys.

To hold the said land and premises of the said Robert and his heirs, paying annually twelve pence at Easter in lieu of all services, saving foreign service for the king.
