Description

Lease from Arthur Gregorye of Styvechale, esq. and Jane his wife, to Edward Holte of Covent', esq., for 20 pounds paid to Thomas Edge of Covent', (and in consideration of a lease made by Humphrey Ferrers of Tamworth' Castell, esq. to the said Thomas Edge), of a messuage, with houses, barns, etc. and a close adjoining, and a yard land of arable, and all the meadow and arable land pertaining to the same, late in the tenure of William Botte, and before of John Smyth, deceased; also a close at Duilot Hill called Langellgrove, now in the tenure of the said Thomas Edge, and before of Henry Bagnall', deceased; all of which property is situated in the town and fields of Styvechall'; to hold the same from Michaelmas last for a term of 21 years, rendering annually 26s. 8d. (2 terms), i.e. 20 shillings for the messuage and yard land and 6s. 8d. for the croft at Duylet Hill; and also paying a heriot when due according to the custom of the manor of Styvechall'; and the said Edward to have rights of lop and crop, and to repair the said property at his own expense, with, if necessary, great timber provided by the said Arthur. Endorsed: i) with an additional clause to the effect that when the said Arthur is called to the Queen's service in the wars, then the said Edward will pay to the said Arthur 6s. 8d.
