Poster advertising the 'Peremptory Sale of New Place, Stratford-upon-Avon', with extensive manuscript annotations by Edward Tyrell Smith explaining that he and Charles Gruneisen had travelled down to Stratford to attend the sale, in order 'to purchase it from being built on', only to find the sale had been postponed to enable J.O.Halliwell to buy it by subscription. He continues with a statement of what he would have done with the building, namely to have turned it into a 'Shakespearian School for those whose genius would have enabled them in time to repeat the words of the immortal bard ... '
