This version of Othello in Marathi by Rav Saheb Mahadev Govin Shastri Kolhatkar in 1867 is considered to be the first translation of a Shakespeare play into Marathi. Although no comprehensive list of Shakespeare translations into Indian languages exists, scholars believe that there are around 65 translations, transliterations, adaptations created between 1867 and 1915, and this translation of Othello is considered to be one of the most important, and indeed popular, translations. Although considered a "translation" by many, it is, like most translations of the time, an adaptation. Translators of English language plays in colonial India of the late 1800s often found themselves altering and adapting works to suit their audiences. Strategies of translation or adaptation largely depended on the translators and their cultural experiences and pressures faced at the time. Rav Saheb Mahadev Govin Shastri Kolhatkar was of the "elite class" in India at the time, where the readership of his translation would have been limited to higher castes and classes. The translator would have been heavily influenced by the colonial teachings and tastes that he experienced at his level of society, and his translation of Othello "bears the imprint of his own cultural values, on the one hand and those of the colonizer on the other."
