This is the first restoration quarto of Henry IV, part 1 and the ninth surviving edition in all. The previous edition had been in 1639. Interestingly enough, Hogan points out that this is the only acting edition of the play published before 1750. He also details the numerous excisions, notably in III, i (lines 140 to end) and the whole of IV, iv. The adaptation is by the great actor Thomas Betterton (163?-1710), who took the part of Falstaff. See Hogan, Shakespeare in the theatre 1701-1800, page 144.
