Souvenir spectacles case

Description

A carved souvenir spectacle-case in the shape of a book, probably 18th century; apparently made from crab tree wood. According to one legend, Shakespeare took part in a drinking contest at Bidford-on-Avon in Warwickshire and subsequently fell asleep underneath a crab tree. The case is engraved with the (unreliable) date '1646 Mch ye viii' and the name 'john jordan', indicating that it belonged to the poet, local historian and Shakespeare enthusiast John Jordan (1746-1809)., Earlier catalogue description - A curiously carved spectacle-case in the shape of a book; made of the Crab Tree; the case, engraved with the date '1646 Mch ye viii' and the name 'john jordan', belonging to the family of the Poet John Jordan
