Iron strongbox

Description

A late 17th-century Nuremburg iron strongbox; the rectangular lid and sides bound with iron straps; the front with shaped false 'lockplate'; the ends with carrying handles and with keyhole to the top; German, about 1680; interior of lid filled with multiple lock covered with decorative cut and chased steel plate showing mermaids, mermen and birds in a floral and fruit scroll design; lid held open with iron arm; separate internal strongbox across one end of interior with hinged top and single lock.
