Anne Hathaway's Cottage

Description

Anne Hathaway's Cottage, 1895

Oil on canvas

J. Laurence Hart (d.1907)

An oil painting of Anne Hathaway's Cottage from the garden. The view focuses on the middle and end parts of the building, cutting off the original section which is closest to Cottage Lane. The choice of composition is a departure from the more common depictions of the cottage which show a wider view of the building from the lane. Hart has devoted much of the foreground to the garden and his treatment of the cottage emphasises its uneven lines and the rambling thatched roof.

J. Laurence (Lawrence) Hart was a landscape and coastal painter who lived in Oxfordshire, Stratford-upon-Avon and Birmingham throughout his life. He was active from the early 1880s, the last exhibition of his work was in 1906, and produced many scenes of landscapes and buildings in the Warwickshire and Midlands regions.
