Raeren Cavalier Panel Jug

Description

Late 16th century Raeren Cavalier Panel Jug; brown glazed stoneware, partly mottled; plain rim with fine rilled neck; strap handle with long pointed tail; multiple cordons at the bottom of the shoulder, a cordon below vertical sided wall panel and above rounded foot; shoulder has seven panels defined by bands of vertical lines each containing a trefoil leaf motif; the vertical wall has eight arcaded panels containing soldiers in various poses (smoking pipes, playing pipe and drum, carrying swords etc) wearing contemporary dress; in the spandrels above the arches are winged masks; decoration in moulded relief; shoulder and part of the wall of the vessel have been rebuilt.
