Sharpening steel

Description

A sixteenth-century sharpening steel; wrought iron; decorative integral handle with thistle-shaped terminal surmounted by two hooped bands with a swan on the first hoop, the second hoop being divided into two, with flower/thistle ends flanking the swan; the main handle-shaft has relief and incised banding, with a frilled finger-guard; the steel end is square-sectioned, with a waisted top (under the finger guard) and a tapered point.
