Blackwork cap

Description

Cap, c. 1600-1700. Woman's cap or coif of white/cream plain weave linen decorated with a design of small fish and crescent moons in blackwork embroidery, using black silk thread and metal threads, with metal sequins or spangles. Front edge of cap is decorated with bobbin lace made from metal and linen thread, with spangles. Lower edge is trimmed with 11 small loops of linen thread - presumably for insertion of a drawstring.
