Grain ark

Description

A 16th- or 17th-century oak ark or 'hutch'; the three-plank canted lid with raised and molded clamps; originally pin-hinged to rear uprights; the front and back clamped construction linked at the sidesby a shaped rail; the uprights extended to form feet; the lid secured by staple and two-link chain; English, c. 1550-1700; all timbers riven and some dressed by adzing; considerable later paint in three layers: 1. blue-white 2. brown-buff 3. dark brown scumble; the interior has only the first paint layer and base boards unpainted on the underside; the pin hinges broken (three later iron hinges now removed).
