Boarded Chest

Description

A mid 17th-century elm boarded chest; the plain rectangular lid moulded to the front, with gouged ends; the front plank with an upper band of paired and reversed S-scrolls flanking a shaped lock plate, above four diamond-shaped lozenges, separated by areas of cross-hatching; the bottom board projecting with a moulded edge; raised on end boards with shaped projecting buttresses; the top deeply carved with the initials B R M; English, c.1650; rear feet patched.
