Sir Edward Walker

Description

A portrait painting of Sir Edward Walker (1612-1677); in oils on canvas; full-size portrait, half-length, of man seated at table dressed in black robes with white cambric collar and cuffs; long, dark brown hair, dark brown eyes, dark brown moustache and small wispy beard; garter insignia hangs around neck; left hand raised, right hand holding folds of gown; paper on (stone) table before him; marble bust and pastoral landscape behind him; hair and sky appears to have been repainted.

On 18 May 1675, Walker bought New Place, which had been William Shakespeare's home in Stratford-upon-Avon, for £1060 from the surviving trustee of Elizabeth, Lady Barnard, Shakespeare's grandchild and heir. Walker does not seem to have lived there, but at Clopton in Warwickshire.
