Saltglazed stoneware flagon

Description

A saltglazed stoneware flagon; single handle; tan with two bands of scrolling below straight rim; above the shoulder a medallion containing a figure of a soldier carrying pike and sword, wearing a hat; in his right hand he holds a bag/fiddle with four tassels below and another above; lettering within the medallion: 'ICH BEN EIN HELT ICH HAF DEN BVIDEL GOLT'; on the shoulder a ring of twenty-two lion masks; below the shoulder five medallions identical to the one above the shoulder but with additional outer ring of lettering: 'GELDERLOS BEN ICH ALTOS' and 'MOETEN SEI WEISSEN ALDEI DIT LEISSEN : P.M.87'; extensively repaired and infilled with plaster.
