Maiolica stand
Description
A 17th century maiolica stand; white ground with blue, yellow and green decoration; octagonal, four straight sides and four curved; at four corners a heraldic beast (lion?) holding the plate on its back clear of the ground; in the centre an ecclesiastical armorial with a helmet; around the sides, on recessed centre and ledge, blue and yellow bands of decoration; raised rim; in centre of reverse side a circular projection to support centre of plate; cracked/broken diagonally, repaired and crudely repainted; slightly chipped around rim.
The fleurs de lys arms featured on the dish are a variant of the Orsini family's, according to William Thomas Collins (28.1.1999).
