Courting Settle

Description

The settle has four horizontal planks joined by shaped and edge-moulded uprights to sides and two moulded battens to the rear; the single-plank moulded seat supported on extensions of the side uprights with integral shaped arms; raised on sledge feet; English, c.1760-1800; the top back of the settle now attached to the ceiling beam by iron rods; the uprights with old bracing; the seat reinforced with planked under-framing; heavy worm damage, especially to seat and lower portions. Has become traditionally known as Shakespeare and Anne's 'courting settle'.
