Jacket

Description

Long-sleeved embroidered jacket, the front, sides and sleeves of white/cream plain weave linen, and the back of a coarser twill weave fabric - probably linen. The jacket fastens at centre back with modern cotton laces threaded through stitched eyelets, and at centre front by metal hooks and eyes. The front, sides and sleeves are decorated with embroidered design of trailing stems and leaves worked in coloured silk threads and metal threads, with metal spangles/sequins.

The jacket is thought to have been worn by Eleanor Cave, who married Sir George Beeston of Beeston Castle, Cheshire in 1609; widowed 1611; she then married Sir Thomas Roe at St Margaret's, Westminster on 15th December 1614; died 1675; Roe was Ambassador to Jahangir the Mughal, 1615-18 and to the Sublime Porte (Constantinople), 1621-28; Lady Roe accompanied him to the latter.
