The Hunt portrait of William Shakespeare

Description

A portrait of William Shakespeare by an unknown artist, painted in oils on canvas. The way that Shakespeare is depicted strongly resembles his funerary monument from Holy Trinity Church in Stratford-upon-Avon. The portrait is possibly based on the funerary monument. When the portrait first came to light in the 1800s there was some speculation that it had served as the model for the funerary monument but this now seems highly unlikely because it was painted no earlier than the late 1700s. It was presented to the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust by William Oakes Hunt in 1861 and is also known as The Hunt Portrait.
