Shakespeare's Birthplace and the Swan and Maidenhead Inn
Description
Watercolour painting of Shakespeare's Birthplace, 1858.
At the time the painting was executed, the main part of the building had become the Swan and Maidenhead Inn. This view of the Birthplace is based on how it appeared at the end of the 18th/early 19th Century. By the time this watercolour was produced in 1858, reconstruction work had started on the eastern end of the building to remove a brick facade that had covered the timber framing from 1808 and to reinstate the end gabled window depicted in the late 18th century. This work was completed in 1862.
